Throughout this course you will be reading Greek literature from Classical Antiquity and up till Early Byzantine times, with a focus on the difference between mythos and logos, between mythological narration and ordered (rhetorical/philosophical) presentation. All ancient and medieval texts are read in translation.
We will read a selection of texts by famous Greek authors – Sappho, Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Herodotus, Plato, Lucian, Plutarch, Plotinus, and many others. When analyzing the texts, we will compare ancient and modern theories of interpretation and investigate the historical continuity in the use of ancient rhetorical theory.
The course is a compulsory component of the Master of Arts (120 credits) programme in Language and Linguistics specialising in Greek/Modern Greek. It can also be taken as a freestanding course. It can normally be included in a first or second cycle degree. With the approval of the relevant authenticating body, it can also be included in certain professional degrees.
