Course 7.5 credits • ENGR16
This course is obligatory for students in the master's programme in languages and linguistics specialising in English. It can also be an elective course for other students within the same programme.
Students who have finished the BA course in English (ENGK01) can also take this course as a fee-standing course.
The course can be an elective course within ENGX64 (English: Linguistic specialisation (91-120 credits)).
The contents of the course
The course gives insight into various theories of lexical semantics with an emphasis on functional usage-based approaches including relevant aspects of insights into lexicography. The mental lexicon is studied, in which issues such as the learning and "storage" of linguistic meaning are dealt with. Recent research within the field of lexicology is discussed, and used to form a basis for the student’s own research. The students complete an autonomous research assignment with an emphasis on language use, language learning or the system of language.
After the course
After taking this course you will know much more about the human lexicon and what relevant modern research within the field of lexicology looks like. You can use this knowledge in research projects at various levels or to better understand how humans acquire new languages.
