Course
Course 30 credits • ENGK03
This is the BA course in English, that is, the course you need to finish in order to be able to get a BA (bachelor's degree) in English. You need a BA in order to go on to get an MA (master's degree).
At Lund University you get a BA in either English linguistics or English literature. However, your do not need to choose your specialisation before the start of the course, and you will get more information in the intro meeting. It may be a good idea, though, to start thinking about this choice as early as possible.
This course is also offered as a part-time course, in which term 1 consists of all the course modules (see below) except the degree project, and term 2 is spent completing the 15-credit degree project.
If you have studied English at a university elsewhere, you need to have finished 60 relevant credits to be eligible. If you haven't yet got 60 credits of English, you may apply for a waiver. Please see the instructions here: www.sol.lu.se/engelska/for-studenter/dispens-fran-kravet-om-fullbordad-kurs
The contents of the course (English level 3)
This course is considerably more academic than the previous courses in English (ENGA04 and ENGA22), and the main focus is on the degree project (worth 15 credits). The choice between literature and linguistics also determines the other courses you take. If your specialisation is linguistics, you take English linguistics: Theory, Method and Academic Writing (7.5 credits) and typically a linguistic Elective course (7.5 credits), while if your specialisation is literature, you take English literature: Theory, Method and Academic Writing (7.5 credits) and usually a literary Elective course (7.5 credits).
After the course (English level 3)
After having finished this course you can get a BA (bachelor's degree) in English, provided that you also have 90 credits in other subjects. When you have a BA, you can apply to a master's programme and go on to get an MA (master's degree) in English. At the Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL) there is a master's programme in literature, culture and media, and a master's programme in languages and linguistics.
There is also the possibility of studying 1.5 years at the Department of Education to become a school teacher (KPU Kompletterande Pedagogisk Utbildning), when you have 90 or 120 credits of English and the required number of credits in another relevant subject. Please read the relevant information about KPU at www.uvet.lu.se/utbildning/kompletterande-pedagogisk-utbildning.
Today it is normally necessary to have an MA if you want to be a Ph.D. student and eventually get a Ph.D. and teach English at university level.
