The course begins with a short introduction to feminism and gender theories. This is followed by a review of the aspiration for modernism of the Arab world during the early 20th century and the origins and development of the women s movement. Various themes are dealt with against this background with the aim of understanding gender-related issues in contemporary social, economic and political contexts. The lives of women are examined from their own perspective through the study of several specially selected contemporary female Arab writers.
