The course deals with the establishment and consolidation of the Middle Eastern states in relation to regional security issues and conflict management. The perception of the various states in the region (and other powers) regarding security and threats to security are analysed. The course also discusses the role and politics of the states, both in the Middle Eastand in the global arena.
A number of case studies concerning security and threats are examined: ethnicity, religion, access and control of water and oil resources, further Iraqi crises, conflicts in the area surrounding the Persian Gulf and the Israeli-Palestine conflict.
