The course deals with the effect of imperialism on the Middle East and its consequences. The course also examines how the various states in the region were formed and what has happened in the period since their creation. Among key areas studied and analysed are the political and economic relationship of dependence between the super powers and Middle Eastern States, patron - client relations, attempts to regionalise, the tensions between regional autonomies and new external dominance. The course examines specific conflict areas, for example the Israeli - Palestine conflict, minority conflicts, and conflicts and cooperation relating to the Persian Gulf.
