The course deals with general aspects of pragmatics, the study of context-sensitive meaning. It takes up traditional topics within pragmatics and text linguistics such as speech acts, reference, deixis, presupposition, and conversational implicature, as well as a number of other relevant aspects of pragmatics, such as spoken discourse/dialogue structure and information structure. Within these broader areas, special attention is devoted to issues such as prosody in conversational interaction, intonational meaning, and social deixis.
