Grammatikseminarium: Fabio Montermini (University of Toulouse), "Do we really need affixoids? The in-between space between compounding and affixation"
The main goal of the talk is to discuss the nature and behavior of morphological processes which lie in between affixal derivation and compounding, and the relevance of such labels as "affixoid", "combining form", etc. By taking examples from various languages (French, Italian, Russian...), I'll show that i) several of these processes, at least as a tendency, display a behavior which is close to that of canonical affixation; ii) it is impossible to identify one or even a limited number of discrete classes of phenomena with homogeneous behavior, regardless of their origin. More generally, the discussion will be placed within a dynamic model of morphological organization, according to which the derivational system of a language simultaneously contains processes which are at different levels of grammaticalization. Consequently, canonical affixation and compounding are better seen as the extremes of a continuum, along which all intermediate processes can also be placed, rather than discrete classes of distinct phenomena.
